Spring has sprung, which means that chick days are here! Whether you’re a rookie chick parent or a seasoned veteran, you may be shocked at the amount of time and care that goes into raising your new birds — who, like all babies, are very high-maintenance!
Grayslake has asked Hubbard Feeds nutritionist Dr. Ed Bonnette to weigh in on some of the most common questions about managing and feeding baby chicks so that they grow to be happy and healthy adults.
Providing chicks with a high-quality, properly balanced feed will help take some of the guesswork out of feeding and ensure that you get them off to a good start. Dr. Bonnette will speak about the advantages of feeding Homestead® poultry feeds, a line of complete and balanced feed for backyard poultry from hatching to maturity that includes Bioplex® organic trace minerals, select proteins and other advanced nutritional technologies from Alltech to support immunity and digestion for healthy development.

SPEAKER
Dr. Ed Bonnette
Companion Animal Nutritionist, Homestead Feeds
Dr. Ed Bonnette received both a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in science at the Ohio State University. He completed his Ph.D. at Virginia Tech and is board-certified by the American College of Animal Nutrition.
Dr. Bonnette makes it his goal each day to develop or employ tools and products that will make customers’ lives easier and better and to help them achieve success with their animals.
Although he grew up milking cows on a small dairy and beef farm, Dr. Bonnette’s career has been spent working extensively with animals that do not “oink or moo,” as he would tell you. He has spent most of his career serving as a nutritionist for pets and specialty animals, as well as some less traditional farm animals. He has also served as an assistant professor of animal science at the University of Findlay.
“Whether I go to a farm to solve a nutrition or management concern, write an article to explain a nutrition topic or speak to a group of 4-Hers, I still get excited about the chance to help someone,” Dr. Bonnette said. “To see someone I’ve helped achieve their goals and experience success is always a great day for me and motivates me to do more.”
