The design of the hospital pen

Occasionally, in any animal production system, sick individuals need to be isolated from the others and maintained in an environment most conducive to their recovery. For pigs, “hospital pens” should be available in case of illness and must meet the requirements of the main groups of pigs being housed (e.g., post-weaning, growing and finishing weight animals, and adult sows). For the younger animals, two types of pen must be available:

  • One to cope with acutely sick animals;
  • Another for animals during their recovery period, after the immediate disease threat has been negated.
