Gut Health for Poultry

Gut health is not just the absence of pathogens, but the maintenance and optimisation of gastrointestinal (GI) structure and integrity to enable birds to reach their full genetic potential.

Despite the broiler and turkey industry focusing on feed conversion ratio (FCR) and weight gain, and the laying and breeder industry focusing on eggs/bird, hatchability and shell strength, all of these measures have an intrinsic link to gut health. It can be thought of as one of the fundamentals of efficient performance.

From hatch to table, Alltech’s nutritional technologies help poultry producers overcome challenges to support bird health and producer profitability

Gut Microbial Diversity

Many factors can cause imbalance in the population of microbial species that inhabit the gut, including disease and therapeutic antibiotic use. Upsetting the microbiome balance in turn reduces feed digestion and feed conversion ratio. The microbiota and immunity also has an intrinsic link, and so ensuring a diverse balanced environment is beneficial for the immune system. Restoring gut microbial diversity is the key to pathogen control and removing antibiotic resistance.

Science-backed solutions

Alltech’s nutrigenomics research is revolutionising our understanding of how animal health and performance are affected by what an animal eats. The Alltech Center for Animal Nutrigenomics — part of Alltech’s global headquarters in Nicholasville, Kentucky — is the first of its kind, allowing scientists to study how nutrition impacts gene expression.
